How to Make a Cow Whip

Cow whips, more commonly referred to as bull whips, consist of strands of long, braided leather. These whips are known for their traditional use in controlling livestock in open country. These tools are also known for being able to create a small sonic boom, and have become popular among enthusiasts and hobbyists. The whip can be used in such a way that when snapped, allows the end to move faster than the speed of sound, creating the sonic boom. Braided cow whips can be made with long, thin strips of leather.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 10 strips of leather to 1/8 inch wide and 6 feet long.

    • 2

Braid the whip using nine of the 10 strips. Set aside the extra strip for later use.

    • 3

Gather the nine strips of leather tie them together. Tie the strands together in a knot approximately 12 inches from the end.

    • 4

Secure the knotted end to a table or other surface using duct tape. This will hold the end in place, allowing you to braid the whip.

    • 5

Separate the leather into three groups, with three strips of leather in each group.

    • 6

Braid the leather using a traditional braiding pattern. Cross the left-hand group of strands over the center strands. Then, cross the right-hand group of strands over the center strand. Continue this alternating pattern until you are approximately 4 inches from the end. Tie another knot in this end to secure the braid.

    • 7

Remove the tape from the whip and free it from the work table.

    • 8

Using the 12-inch section of free strands on the end, fold the ends of the strands until they are even with the knot. This will create a 6-inch long loop in the end.

    • 9

Use the spare strand to tie a knot around the folded ends, securing them in place. Wrap the remainder of this strip around the folded strands, creating a smooth handle. Tie the end in place with a knot once it is completely wrapped.

    • 10

Tie the loose 4-inch ends of the whip into individual knots for a decorative look.
