Materials
Materials for kites include fabric, wood, glue and ribbon. Search for supplies in your home, ask friends and family for their leftover crafting supplies or hit up craft and department stores in your area. Don't use your most expensive or preferred fabric for your first kite; practice with fabric you like less and perfect the craft of kite-making.
Themes
You can make a simple red kite, with elegant beauty, or you can make a themed kite. Ideas for kite themes include kites made "for a cause" (pink for breast cancer, purple for pancreatic cancer, yellow for missing children) or for a particular holiday such as Memorial or Independence Day. Easter, during the spring, is another occasion when the weather makes kiting an ideal activity.
Do-it-Yourself
Bugs, fighters and over 1,500 other designs are featured in "The Magnificent Book of Kites." Consider adapting one of these designs if you're an advanced kite enthusiast or stick to one of the basic entries if you're a novice.
Showcasing Your Kites
Showcase your kites by organizing a picnic for your family and friends. Have different teams bring a dish and fly your kites together. You can also host kite flying occasions just for fun or for special events such as a memorial for a loved one or in honor of a birthday, engagement or wedding.
