How to Install a Go Cart Belt

A go cart has a special type of drive called a continuously variable transmission (CVT). These use two V-shaped pulleys (clutches) that open and close as the cart's speed increase. The opening and closing of the pulleys moves a drive belt up and down the inside of the clutches changing the drive ration from the engine to the wheel. Periodically, this belts need replacing because of natural wear or driver abuse. Installing a drive belt is a simple process that involves no tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Prop up the back of the go cart so that its drive wheels are off the ground. This is done by placing blocks of wood under the rear chassis.

    • 2

Remove the cotter pin that secures the belt guard to the go cart and remove the belt guard by pulling it off with your hands.

    • 3

Determine the direction that the belt will be rotating. Look at the drive wheels and logically think what direction they need to rotate to move the go cart forward. This is typically counterclockwise.

    • 4

Position the drive belt so that the arrow marked on its outside is facing the direction the go cart engine rotates the clutches. Install the belt around the primary clutch by wrapping it around it. The primary clutch is the one attached to the engine.

    • 5

Wrap the other end of the belt as far around the secondary clutch as you can. Rotate the secondary clutch, with your hand, to force the belt into position.
