How to Fish for Redfish With Shrimp Under a Float

Redfish, also known as red drum and channel bass, reside inshore or in coastal waters along the eastern seaboard and gulf coast. Redfish spook easily in shallow waters, but are fun to catch because they put up a fight. An excellent way to catch redfish is to use a fishing pole with a float and shrimp as bait.

Things You'll Need

  • 7-foot medium rod and spinning reel combo
  • 8- to 10-pound test monofilament
  • 2 1/2 to 3 feet of 20-pound test monofilament leader
  • 2-inch hook
  • Weighted float

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an area where you think redfish reside. Typically, redfish are found in grassy waters, near mangroves and under docks in approximately three to four feet of water. If you are in a boat, turn off the motor 100 yards away from where you want to fish, so you do not spook the redfish.

    • 2

Tie a two-inch hook to the line of your seven-foot spinning rod and reel combo, and attach the weighted float approximately two feet above the hook. The depth of the weighted float can be adjusted later, if needed.

    • 3

Hook the live shrimp under the "horn" using a two-inch hook. The horn is where the head attaches to the body of the shrimp.

    • 4

Cast the bait and the weighted float into the area where you think the redfish can be found. Wait for the weighted float to go under water, and jerk your rod to set the hook when you feel the fish pulling the line beneath the water's surface.
