How to Troubleshoot Brushless Motors

A brushless motor has a minimal number of moving parts; therefore, any defect could cause catastrophic malfunctioning. Understanding how to troubleshoot your brushless motor will help ensure it functions properly, and help to prolong the life of your device. Learn how to identify the problem and find the solution to maintain the integrity of your brushless motor.

Things You'll Need

Test your vehicle's throttle by connecting a battery and trying to use the vehicle as normal. If the vehicle stutters, then you probably have poor solder joints on your motors terminations; if the motor gets to half throttle and then stutters, you need to change the gear proportion.

    • 2

Re-solder the joints on the motor to ensure a proper connection, and to reduce the resistance of the circuit to a minimum. Heat the solder iron, then touch a small amount of solder to the hot tip. Apply this to each termination on the motor. Ideally, the solder joint should be smooth, and it should cover the entire termination with the wire under the surface of the solder joint.

Open the transmission of your vehicle, then remove the spur gear (it is adjacent to the pinion gear, which sits on the motor shaft). Reinstall a spur gear with a smaller number of teeth, since the stuttering at half-throttle is caused by the overload of the motor. Imagine trying to start driving a normal car in third gear - this is the same kind of idea. The proportion of teeth (which are the grooves on the gear) shouldn't be so high that it forces the motor to work too much. Reduce the tooth count (by replacing the gear) until motor functions normally.

Check the functionality of the motor. If it works - you're done. But, if the motor doesn't react at all to the transmitter's inputs, then you may need to replace your electronic speed control (ESC). Also, make sure you're working with a fully charged battery pack, as a lack of energy could cause the motor to malfunction.
