How to Detect Trashy Areas With the Garrett Ace 250

The Garrett Ace 250 is a portable, handheld metal detector that provides a variety of features and settings for the user to better adapt the detector to the type of objects searched for and the environment in which the searching will be done. By making the proper adjustments, you can maximize your chances for locating coins or other valuable objects, even when using the detector in areas where a good deal of trash or other metallic materials may cause interference.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Power" button on the control module to power on the Ace 250. Press "Sensitivity" to cycle through the eight sensitivity level settings available. The lower levels are recommended for optimal performance when searching areas with excessive metallic interference, such as high-mineral soils, or when in the presence of other metal detectors.

    • 2

Press "Mode" (more than once, if necessary) to select a detection mode that will be effective in areas with trash and other debris. Selecting "Coins," "Jewelry" or "Relics" will instruct the detector to ignore all targets that fall outside the conductivity range of the objects in those categories, and "Custom" mode allows you to narrow that range even more.

    • 3

Set the "Custom" mode to search for a particular type of object (its factory setting is the same as "Coins") by scanning an object similar to the object you wish to find. Note where the Target ID cursor appears, press "DISCRIM" to move the cursor to the left and right and press "ELIM" to eliminate those cursors, leaving only the one corresponding to the scanned object. The detector will then only alert you when a matching object is sensed.

    • 4

Press and hold the "Pinpoint" button to find the exact location of a detected target. When the button is held down, the upper scale on the display will indicate the strength of the signal. When the greatest number of segments appear, the center of the search coil is directly above the target.
