How to: Hot Stamp Metal Tag Printing

Names or words are printed onto a metal tag through a process called stamping. This process is evident in items like dog tags or collars to identify a pet. You can print a name or word on a metal tag by using a metal stamp. If you want to make this process easier, heat the metal first to make it softer. You will need to use a propane torch to heat the metal tag.

Things You'll Need

Propane torch
Tongs
Metal tags
Felt tip marker
Adhesive-backed paper
Stamping block
Metal stamps
Hammer

Instructions

  Ignite the propane torch and hold a metal tag 6 to 8 inches over the flame with the tongs. Hold the metal tag over the flame until it gets hot. Remove it from the flame and turn off the propane torch.

  Allow the metal tag to cool for a few minutes and then place it on the stamping block.

  Write the name or word onto the metal tag with a felt tip marker. You can also write a name on a piece of adhesive-backed paper.

  Place a metal stamp with the first letter or number that you want to use on the metal tag. Strike the end of the metal stamp with a hammer. This will leave an impression in the metal.

  Place the next letter or number on the metal tag and strike with the hammer. Repeat this step to stamp a word or name onto the metal tag.

  Repeat this process to stamp another metal tag.
