How to Convert UTM Coordinates to a Geographic System

Measuring in latitude and longitude is known as the geographic system and is based on the globe's polar axis and its rotation. UTM, or the Universal Transverse Mercator system, is based on a square grid. Unlike with latitude and longitude, you can't use tools like a sextant and clock to determine UTM. You have to lay a grid on a map. Converting UTM to a geographic system involves calculating the Meridional Arc, calculating footprint latitude and finally calculating the latitude and longitude. You can accomplish this using online calculators.

Instructions

    • 1

Perform a search to find an online calculator. Enter the zone in the calculator. It's not possible to convert from UTM to geographic without it. Then enter the hemisphere, either North or South.

    • 2

Enter the northing and the easting.

    • 3

Press the "Convert" button or similar and the geographic coordinates will be displayed in decimal degrees. Negative numbers indicate west longitudes and south latitudes.
