How to Disassemble an AR15 Hand Guard

The AR-15 -- or ArmaLite Model 15 -- is an assault rifle that was originally designed in the late 1950s by Eugene Stoner of Fairchild ArmaLite Corporation. ArmaLite later sold all rights to the AR-15 to Colt. The AR-15 was modeled after the M-16 assault rival, which became the standard issue rifle for U.S. armed forces in the Vietnam war. The handguard on the AR-15 is located on the top and underside of the barrel, and shields the hand of the user from heat generated from firing. The handguard is commonly taken apart when the rifle is disassembled for cleaning.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the clip from the AR-15. Pull the charging handle to the back position to ensure there are no rounds in the chamber. Switch the rifle to "safe."

    • 2

Place the butt of the rifle on a table or bench.

    • 3

Grasp the slip ring with one hand, and pull it downward. The slip ring is the round metal piece between the inside end of the barrel and the body of the rifle.

    • 4

Pull the bottom handguard outward from its base at the point where it is closest to the slip ring. Pull it up and out. Repeat this motion to remove the top handguard.
