How to: Beach Photography

The natural beauty of the beach presents the perfect opportunity to take a picture. Too much sunlight, hordes of tourist and a number of other factors can prevent you from taking the best picture possible. Don't let this happen to you next time you visit your favorite beach. Use some beach photography techniques and use several tools to ensure your beach photos come out exactly the way you want them every time.

Place a UV filter over the camera lens. Too much sunlight can cause glare and other problems that compromise the clarity of your photographs. UV filters eliminate this problem.

    • 2

Set your camera to the fastest shutter speed possible. Beach photos usually include numerous moving objects, including waves, wildlife and tourist. A quick shutter speed reduces the blurring of moving objects.

    • 3

Focus on a singular object or subject when taking a picture at the beach. This method, called framing, helps center the rest of your picture and prevents your pictures from appearing off-balance or uneven. Framing clearly puts one subject as the focus of the photo.

    • 4

Take photos in the early morning or late afternoon if possible. You have less sunlight to create glare problems at these times. Furthermore, sunrise and sunset create more colors that you can integrate into your photos.

    • 5

Study the ebb and flow of the crowds at your beach. Less crowds means more opportunities to take unobstructed photos. Try to take your photos at the least crowded times.

    • 6

Set your flash to a fill flash setting during the afternoon. The bright sun can create shadows on objects, especially people. The fill flash setting makes the camera flash and photograph simultaneously which, in turn, reduces the appearance of shadows in the photo.
