How do I Make Dyed Canvas Shoes?

Canvas shoes, including slip-on styles and sneakers, that were all the rage in the 1950's and '60s, are experiencing a comeback. These popular shoes go with just about everything, and you can even throw them in the washing machine when they need it. Need a special color? No problem; make up a batch of dye and color the canvas shoes yourself. Always start out with clean shoes so the dye will penetrate the canvas completely.

Things You'll Need

Plastic gloves
Old clothes
Dye
Plastic tub
Wood block

Instructions

  Pull on plastic gloves and old work clothes. Find a plastic tub that is large enough to hold the shoes in a single layer.

  Open the package of dye. Mix it with water according to the package directions. Use a long utensil or stick to stir the mixture and dissolve the dye completely.

  Submerge the canvas shoes in the dye with the bottoms facing upward. Place a wood block on top of the shoes to prevent them from floating.

  Check the dyeing capacity from time to time. Swirl the dye solution around the shoes periodically to help coat them.

  Rinse the shoes in clear water when the recommended dyeing time is up, or earlier, if you are satisfied with the intensity of the color.

  Dry the canvas shoes in the sun or in a well-ventilated area.
