How to Attach Buttons to Art Canvas

Three-dimensional wall art catches the eye in a way a flat canvas never can. Skilled painters study for years to learn how to create the illusion of depth in their paintings. Modern painters learn to add dimensional elements to their painting with a sculpting medium. You can quickly and easily add actual depth by sewing buttons onto your canvas before you paint it. The buttons can be painted or left plain.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw your design on the canvas including the placement of the buttons.

    • 2

Thread a needle with 30 inches of upholstery thread and knot the ends of the thread together.

    • 3

Bring the needle through the canvas from the back at the location of the button.

    • 4

Thread the button onto the thread, going from the back of the button to the front. Put the button against the canvas and stick the needle through an adjacent hole and back through the canvas directly behind the hole. Pull the thread tight.

    • 5

Make two more stitches through the same holes in the same way, pulling the thread tight each time. If the button has four holes, stitch throughout the other two holes in the same way.

    • 6

Knot the thread close to the back of the canvas and cut off the excess thread.

    • 7

      Add additional buttons as desired.
