How to Mount the Launch Lug

A launch lug is the part of a model rocket that keeps the rocket attached to the guide rail on the launcher. During the first few fractions of a second after the engine ignites, the launch lug securely guides the rocket along the launch rail and insures stability. Launch lugs on most model rockets are simply small paper or cardboard tubes glued to the rocket's body. Newer, quick-assembly model rocket kits feature plastic launch lugs that fit into a slot, either on the rocket's fin unit or on another molded plastic body section.

Things You'll Need

  • Angle square ruler or T-square
  • Pencil
  • PVC (white) glue
  • Hobby file
  • Plastic modeling cement

Instructions

  1. Paper/Cardboard Launch Lug

    • 1

Lay the body tube of the model rocket flat on a stable work surface with the part of the tube where you want to mount the launch lug facing up. If you've already attached the fins to the body tube, be careful not to damage them.

    • 2

Place the short edge of the angle square ruler flat across the top of the body tube so that the long edge runs the length of the rocket. Mark the location along the ruler where you want to mount the launch lug. Use a pencil to lightly draw a short line that runs along the length of the body tube. The line should be about a quarter-inch longer than the launch lug.

    • 3

Apply a ribbon of PVC glue to one side of the launch lug. Run the glue the entire length of the launch lug and apply it generously. Line up the launch lug with your pencil mark. This will ensure that it's vertically square to the body tube. Press the glue-coated side of the launch lug into place and hold it firmly against the body tube for 30 seconds to allow the glue to set.

    • 4

Let go of the launch lug, then wait about 45 minutes for the glue to dry.

    • 5

Apply thin fillets of PVC glue along each side of the launch lug. Smooth the fillets down with either your finger or a small Popsicle stick. The fillets provide a wider, firmer bond between the launch lug and the rest of the rocket.

    Plastic Launch Lug

    • 6

Test fit the launch lug to its mounting slot. Plastic launch lugs usually mount to plastic fin assemblies on smaller rockets or molded plastic mid-section pieces on large rockets. If necessary, use a small hobby file to remove any burrs or plastic flash that interfere with a good fit.

    • 7

Apply a small amount of plastic modeling cement to each side of the launch lug's base. Don't use too much glue. Large amounts of modeling cement can damage the plastic and prevent a good bond between the launch lug and the rocket.

    • 8

Press the launch lug into its mounting slot. Hold it in place for 30 seconds to allow the glue to set, then set the rocket aside. Allow 30 minutes for the glue to dry before handling.
