How to Troubleshoot a Multimeter

A multimeter is a device that detects an electrical current. A multimeter is used to check for AC voltage, DC voltage, electrical current, resistance and continuity. Problems experienced with a digital multimeter include a corrept LCD screen that is not illuminated or no DC current being detected. You can easily fix these issues by first determining the cause of the problem.

Instructions

  1. LCD Screen Not Illuminated

    • 1

Turn the dial on the device to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Remove the screw or screws for the battery cover with the Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the cover from the device and set it aside.

    • 3

Take the old 9-volt battery out of the compartment and then insert a new battery.

    • 4

Set the cover back in place on the device. Tighten the screws to secure the battery cover.

    • 5

Turn the dial to the "On" position to see if the LCD screen is now illuminated.

    No DC Current Detected

    • 6

Disconnect the clamps for the probes from the circuit, if still connected and turn the dial to "Off."

    • 7

Remove the screw securing the battery cover. Take out the battery and locate the fuse that is connected to the circuit board.

    • 8

Pull the fuse out of the device and see if it has blown. The fuse if blown if it looks black of the piece of metal is broken.

    • 9

Insert a replacement fuse into the device. Replace the battery and battery cover and then turn the dial to the "ON" position.

    • 10

Reattach the probes and see if the DC current is detected.
