How to Make a Baffle to Cover Your Face in a Sleeping Bag

It is not pleasant having your face exposed to the elements and insect bites while you are camping and trying to sleep, but there is a solution. Add a face-covering baffle to your sleeping bag for protection. Use lightweight woven fabric if your concern is avoiding the elements. Use mosquito netting if insects are the problem. Hook and loop tape makes the best type of closure for a face baffle, because it securely seals the baffle's opening without making you feel trapped in the sleeping bag.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1
A mummy bag is a tight-fitting sleeping bag with a small face opening.

Spread out the zipped sleeping bag, face up, on the floor or a table.

    • 2

Place the newspaper or lightweight cardboard inside of the bag, centered under the face hole.

    • 3

Trace around the inside edge of the bag's face hole.

    • 4

Remove the newspaper and set the bag aside. Lay the newspaper flat on the table.

    • 5

Add 3 inches all the way around the traced line.

    • 6

Place the drawn pattern on top of your fabric or netting and cut the material following the outer line.

    • 7

Cut the hook and loop tape into 3-inch-long strips.

    • 8

Place the fabric or netting face down on the table and fold over the cut edge 1/2 inch all the way around. Place the hook-side strips of the hook and loop tape along the edge so the fabric's cut edge is covered by the tape. Pin the tape to the fabric or netting.

    • 9

Sew 1/8 inch from the hook tape's outer edge. Sew the inner edge of the tape the same way.

    • 10

Pick up and unzip the mummy bag then pin the loop-side pieces of the tape just below the fitted outer edge of the face hole, starting and ending the tape 1/2 inch from the bag's zipper. Sew all the way around the outer edge, 1/8 inch from the tape's edge. Sew the inner edge of the loop tape 1/8 inch from the tape's edge.

    • 11

      Remove all of the pins.
