How to Make Rain Sound Effects With Foley

The Foley method of making sound effects was first used to produce authentic-sounding additions for radio programs and live performances. The sounds typically included smashing windows, barking dogs, thunder, hooting owls, gurgles, bubbles, moans, groans and falling rain. Sounds such as firearms were prerecorded because they were too dangerous and sometimes went off too late. Various objects were used to make the sounds and sometimes only required a microphone and a heavy breath.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place dried peas in two long, narrow wood boxes. Fill each box about half full. The boxes should be about 3 inches wide and between a foot or two long.

    • 2

Tilt the boxes in a see-saw motion for consistent sound. Two boxes are needed or else the sound won't be consistent.

    • 3

Place the boxes at least six inches from the microphone to get the best quality of sound. When the Foley method was first used, boxes were studded with nails and then placed on see-saw platforms.
