How to Reupholster a Dirt Bike Seat

The seat may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you're thinking of key aspects of a good dirt bike; you certainly wouldn't think it was as important as speed, safety or suspension. Yet an old, damaged seat can cause serious discomfort and ruin your ride. It's something that doesn't have to be tolerated, however. In a few simple steps you can reupholster your dirt bike seat and have a much more comfortable ride -- relatively speaking, of course, considering the terrain you'll be hitting.

Things You'll Need

  • Seat cover or piece of vinyl
  • Measuring tape (optional)
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Order or make a seat cover for your dirt bike. Cut the material yourself if you have confidence in your abilities; all you need to do is measure the seat and cut the cover from a piece of vinyl.

If you prefer, use an upholstery store. Provide the store with the dimensions; you'll be able to choose from a variety of colors and materials, creating a one-of-a-kind seat.

Remove the seat of your dirt bike and place it on a separate table, upside down, so you have access to the staples holding the cover in place.

    • 3

Use pliers and a screwdriver to remove the staples on the underside of the seat; they hold the seat cover in place. Once they're removed, you can take off the old cover; you'll be left with the foam structure of the seat, ready to be reupholstered.

Place the new seat cover on the seat and turn the seat upside down. Push the loose edges of the seat cover against the seat and staple them in place using a staple gun. Work your way around the seat, ensuring that the new cover is stapled and secured all the way around.

Attach the seat and enjoy your new upholstery as you hit the rough terrain and sand dunes.
