How to Disassemble CTR Stock

The Magpul CTR stock is a type of collapsible buttstock used on the AR-15 carbine and its military variants. The stock itself is spring-loaded to help manage the recoil kick when firing the rifle. You may find the occasional need to remove and disassemble the stock from the carbine; either for cleaning or storage, or to install a new stock. It is relatively easy to break down the CTR stock, but doing so requires a couple of tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Armorer's wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble your rifle so that the lower receiver and stock are removed from the upper receiver and barrel. The recoil spring assembly in the stock should be visible through the front of the stock tube.

    • 2

Lift up on the adjustment latch--the small latch near the bottom of the adjustable stock--and pull the buttstock all the way off of the tube.

    • 3

Push in on the recoil spring plug--the gray circle in the stock tube--with your thumb. Remove the buffer retainer peg and spring from immediately in front of the stock tube. Slowly let off pressure with your thumb until you are able to safely pull the recoil spring assembly out of the stock tube.

    • 4

Loosen and remove the castle nut immediately below the stock tube with your armorer's wrench.

    • 5

Unscrew the stock tube from the receiver and set it aside with the rest of the stock pieces.
