Techniques for Hiding a Treasure

Treasures are so beloved because they are hard to come by. In fact, it's not unlike ambitious seekers to spend a lifetime in search of a single item. For a thrilling hunt, a clever and well-planned hiding place is absolutely necessary. But, just as in a game of hide-and-seek, items need not be far away in order to be well-concealed.
  1. Indoors

    • Indoor hiding places can protect fragile treasure from the elements. Whether in a home, barn or office building, objects can be effectively hidden in places that don't meet the eye. Consider placing small treasure inside flower pots, between shelves, under stacks of hay or deep inside a freezer. Large objects will require larger places for concealment such as under floorboards or inside a mattress. This technique will require some planning so that the treasure is hidden in the place where it's least likely to be disturbed or cause a safety hazard.

    Outdoors

    • The great outdoors makes for a thrilling treasure hunt since there are large expanses of space and nature to be covered. Whether the treasure is placed locally or at a distance, it should be hidden in an area that will not be ruined by weather or construction. Bury treasure in city parks, beneath a permanent bed of rocks, or lodge it in a tree so that animals cannot disturb it. The outdoor hiding technique is incomplete without an accompanying treasure map since landscapes can change over time.

    Obvious Spaces

    • Sometimes the person or people hunting for a treasure will overlook the most obvious places, making them perfect for hiding. To use this technique, conceal treasure inside or beneath an everyday item such as a kitchen cupboard, spare tire, door mat, toilet bowl, or dog house. This works particularly well if treasure needs to be hidden from view at a moment's notice and it can be done conspicuously in the presence of others. Again, just be sure that wherever you place your treasure will not create a safety hazard.

    Faraway Places

    • There's peace of mind in knowing that a treasure is far away and out of reach. Yet if it's not hidden well, the object can get stolen or lost forever. Landmarks, military posts, and public attractions make for great hiding places since it's possible to return to the exact location in the future. One technique for hiding a treasure here is to visit the location and discreetly drop off the item while no one is looking. There will be no time for complicated measures. Just in case, the treasure should be revisited at regular intervals to make sure it hasn't disappeared.
