How to Use Metal Detectors on Ohio Power Land

Metal detectors are handheld devices hobbyists use to search for metal objects such as coins. While many people enjoy treasure hunting with their metal detectors, there are certain state-specific rules governing metal detecting that must be observed, particularly on power land in Ohio, also known as Ohio AEP ReCreation Land. The American Electric Power Co. (AEP) implements what is known as "ReCreation" once coal has been mined in any given area. Typically the area is backfilled and re-soiled with grass and other plant life. Today, the 34,000 acres of re-created AEP land now spans three counties and makes up 380 campsites and more than 350 lakes.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out a permit to visit Ohio Power Land. You can obtain a permit at the AEP corporate website, at regional sporting goods or bait shops, the AEP MCConnelsville Ohio office, AEP corporate offices and the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Note that Ohio Power Land is free to visit but does require a permit. The permit is for a lifetime.

    • 2

Adhere to the permit rules as stated on the application, which include not trespassing on posted land, no cutting or damaging live trees or shrubs, and no entering active mining areas.

    • 3

Sign and date the permit to make it official. The permit will allow you to use a metal detector on Ohio Power Land as long as you follow permit rules.
