How to Dispose of Expired Pyrotechnic Marine Flares

A flare is a pyrotechnic device used to attract attention in an emergency situation. It does not explode but gives off smoke that is easy to see in the daytime or burns very brightly so it is visible at night. Depending on the brand and type of flare, the average expiration time is three years from the date of manufacture. No single agency is responsible for collecting and disposing of out-of-date flares. It is left up to the individual to come up with a solution and the solution varies for every region.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your local solid waste management department. Some have drop-off sites or yearly collection times for hazardous materials. Some counties accept flares if you are a resident of that county.

    • 2

Ignite the flares in a safe area on land. Check with the local police and fire departments first for their guidance. They might have additional information or know of local collection programs.

    • 3

Contact the Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron. See if they are interested in taking them. They can use expired flares for demonstrations and training activities.
