How to Make Cold Cast Resin

Cold cast resins are commonly used to create metallic finishes on various works of art. Cold casting requires the mixing of a metallic powder with standard urethane resins to provide color and detail. These resins have a foam texture and require extreme care to prevent breakage. Cold casting your own resins is not only economical but also adds a personal touch to any work.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply your mold releaser to your mold. Most releasers come in aerosol form and are simply sprayed onto the mold. Use a brush to push releaser into small crevices and engravings and repeat spray application.

    • 2

Mix your metallic powder with your resin. Most resins are labeled Part A and Part B. Mix with Part B. Add your liquid coloring agent. Amounts will depend on the size and effect you are attempting. Mix thoroughly. Sculpt.com recommends adding 100 grams of part B, 900 grams of metallic powder and 10 grams of liquid coloring agent to obtain the right consistency. You can adjust as needed.

    • 3

Add your Part A resin to the mixture and mix thoroughly. If using the above measurements you will add 100 grams of Part A to keep desired texture. Your mixture will form a thick paste, like that of toothpaste.

    • 4

Pour your mixture into your mold, coating the entire surface evenly. Do not pour your resin directly into the bottom of your mold or you will lose any detail you are trying to accomplish. Your resin will begin to harden as you pour it. This is exactly what you want.

    • 5

Add foam or beading to your hollow resin to add weight and dimension. Allow to set at room temperature for 30 to 45 minutes. You can add a small amount of heat from a kiln if you wish to quicken your set time.

    • 6

Remove your resin from the mold and scrub it with a mild abrasive cloth or sponge to enhance metallic shine. Spray with two coats of quality clear gloss spray to protect your finished product.
