Things You'll Need
Instructions
Melt a block of wax in a clean saucepan over medium to low heat. Wax blocks contain air bubbles that will prevent your mold from taking its intended shape. Melting it will remove these air bubbles. Pour your melted wax into a plastic of Styrofoam cup and allow to harden. Hardening may take two to three hours. Remove the cup from your wax once it is hard.
Carve the wax in the shape of your desired product with carving tools. Smaller picks are used for details such as writing or delicate designs. For example, if you are wanting a gold ring with engravings, carve the wax into the design you want. As you carve the piece, ensure that it is slightly bigger than what your finished product will be.
Mix your dry plaster in a small bowl with amounts of water, as directed on the package. The amount of plaster you require will depend on the size of the object being molded. Pour half to a full inch of plaster into a small container. Place your wax carving face down into your plaster. Do not press the wax into the mixture.
Cut a piece of metal wire long enough to touch your wax on one end with the other end protruding from the container. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to your wire and insert one end into your container, allowing it to touch the wax. Pour enough plaster into the container to cover your wax model. Allow to set for two to three hours until dry.
Remove the metal wire from the middle of your dried mixture to produce a hole. Remove your plaster from your container and place in a fired kiln. Allow your mold to heat for two to five minutes, depending on the size of your mold. This will melt your wax replica and cure the plaster for use.
Remove the plaster mold from your kiln and place upside down on a towel or paper towel. Allow to cool for one to two hours. Once cooled, your mold is ready for use.
