What Is a Half Salute in Dressage?

Dressage is French for "training" and tests horses'; and riders' abilities. Dressage trials involve following directions for turning, circling, halting and walking. The rider is also asked to salute at the beginning and end of the trial. Normally, dressage involves a complete salute both times, but in the Special Olympics, riders are sometimes asked to half salute if they are not capable of halting and removing their hands from the reins.
  1. Dressage Tests

    • The dressage test judges the movement of the horse and its response to the rider. The rider's actions are also judged for fluency and accuracy. The test involves dressage-specific actions, such as "working trot" and "free walk." The horse is led through a set of tests, including circling right and left in half a circle and halting for the salute. The rider and horse are judged on balance and position, feel and skill, confidence and the connection between the two.

    Standard Salute

    • A standard salute for dressage means the horse must halt and the rider must acknowledge the judges. First, halt the horse at "X" -- representing the middle of the dressage arena. Place the reins in your left hand and lower your chin. Straighten your right arm and slowly move it to behind your right leg. Hold this position for three seconds and look up toward the judges. Pick up the rein and continue onto the course and test with your horse.

    Half Salute

    • Riders performing the half salute will acknowledge the judges as any other rider. However, this is done while still in the working walk when entering the arena. A half salute is similar to the standard salute, but instead of removing your hand from the reins, you will lower your chin and hold for three seconds, as if to "bow," and continue onto the course.

    Half Salute Use

    • For disabled people who are not able to drop the reins, a half salute is accepted in trials. In the Special Olympics, a half salute is used in the "Level CI -- C Dressage Test, Special Olympics Walk Test #1" test. This is the only time in dressage that a half salute is allowed. In all other competitions, a full, standard salute is required.
