Bugs in Chicago

The state of Illinois is home to over 17,000 species of insects (bugs) and only 2,000 that are native to the state. Many of the bugs within Illinois resonate within their city of Chicago. Many are harmless in nature and benefit humans to the ability to consume bacteria and microorganisms that are harmful to the environment. However, others are a nuisance, as well as harmful, when they encounter human beings. Some of the common bugs that Chicago residents run into are June bugs, spider mites, carpenter ants, cucumber beetles, brown recluse spiders, bedbugs and stinkbugs.
  1. Brown Recluse Spider

    • The brown recluse spider is a bug found within Chicago.

Brown recluse spiders are generally between 1/4 to 3/4 inches long, yet may grow bigger. While typically light to medium brown, they range in coloration from cream-colored to dark brown as well as blackish gray. They frequently build webs in wood piles as well as sheds, closets, garages, cellars and other dried out and generally undisturbed areas. Recluse spiders construct irregular webs, which frequently include a defense shelter consisting of disorderly strings. While dwelling in homes, it seems to prefer cardboard, possibly, as it mimics the aging tree bark that the spider inhabits naturally. The brown recluse has within it, deadly hemotoxic venom. An individual receiving a brown recluse bite often will not feel it. The bite may not be immediately painful, yet it is usually serious. Even so, the fangs of the dark brown recluse are quite tiny and normally are not able to penetrate the majority of fabric, like socks.

    White Grubs/June Bugs

    • The lava of a June bug can do major damage to Chicago lawns.

June bugs are 1/2 to 5/8 inches long and reddish brown. The lava of this creature has a brown head and a white body and measures up to 1 inch in size. The lava, better known as "white grubs," can do considerable damage to lawns and is the most common cause of lawn damage in Illinois, according to the Chicago Botanic Garden. These grubs will eat roots of grass and leave large sections of a lawn brown and unable to sustain growth. When the lava turns into a June bug, the brownish bug will journey toward bright lights and enter a house through cracks, taking flight near light bulbs.

    Bedbugs

    • The "bedbug" name comes from the insect's environment of houses and particularly, beds, or other locations where people sleep. Bedbugs, though not purely nocturnal, are mainly productive at night and are able to feed unnoticed on their hosts. Bedbugs choose to feed exclusively about the blood of warm-blooded creatures, which includes humans. Many health effects might occur due to bedbugs including skin rashes, psychological side effects along with allergic symptoms. Medical diagnosis involves both locating bedbugs and the likelihood of compatible signs. Treatment is otherwise systematic with eradication of the bugs and medication.

    Stinkbugs

    • When in danger, a stinkbug uses its special gland to produce a foul smelling liquid.

Stinkbugs are legendary for the bad smell that they generate, which is why so many people desire to get rid of them. This horrible smelling pest looks as if it carries shields on its back. In addition, the bug is brown to black and measures 1 to 2 inches long. If a homeowner does not get rid of stinkbugs, they will generate an undesirable smell throughout a home. A stinkbug has a special gland within its body that helps it produce a foul smelling liquid, whenever it experiences vulnerability or danger. This odor repels potential predators and works as a beacon to others of its species.
