How to Make a Tension Wrench Out of a Hanger

Almost everyone locks him or herself out of the house, shed or desk at some point. Being able to unlock whatever you are locked out of can save you time, hassle and money. Picking a lock requires a lock pick set and a tension wrench, which can easily be made of a wire coat hanger.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire cutters and/or pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the loop from the end of a wire coat hanger with a pair or wire cutters, or by twisting back and forth until the metal breaks.

    • 2

Straighten the length of wire as much as possible with a pair of pliers or a vise. Bend the wire in an "L" shape so that the bottom of the L is about ¾ inch long.

    • 3

Flatten the bottom of the L slightly with a grinder or a file so that it fits in the lock.
