How to Rig Ropes on the AMF Sunfish Sailboat

Sailing the seas can be a very rewarding and enriching experience. Small boats like the AMF Sunfish Sailboat are built with both agility and rigidity for combating the inconsistency of weather at sea. Like any sailboat, the Sunfish requires some initial rigging to prep the sail and mast. Rigs are set up with ropes, or wires, to ensure the stability of the mast and sail which should be in place before you begin. Rigging is fairly easy. It then becomes a matter of connecting the ropes with the right technique and you will be on your way.

Instructions

  1. Attach your sail to the booms

    • 1

Spread your sail on a flat open area where no sharp objects can cause damage. Lay the booms at the edges of the sail with the grommets--small ring holes.

    • 2

Attach the S hook to the tack grommet--large hole at the corner of the sail-- with Sunfish logo facing the upper boom--the boom without blocks.

    • 3

Connect the opposite end to an eyebolt--a structural tie down to attach cables--which will hold the booms together. Crimp the S-hook with your pliers to close it.

    • 4

Thread an outhaul line--a line which is part of the running rig--through the grommet in the sail. The grommet should be at the outboard end of the upper boom.Cut your line at 1/4 the length of your boat.

    • 5

Feed each end of your outhaul line through the hole in the boom end cap. Secure the line by tying a figure eight at each end.

    • 6

Repeat the same step for the lower boom with your other outhaul line. Make your lines semi-tight.

    • 7

Loop your sail rings into the booms at the padeyes, connecting them in a similar fashion to hanging a shower curtain.

    Rigging your boat

    • 8

Remove the clevis ring and pin--fasteners-- from the mainsheet swivel block. Attach the block to the boat placing the block the deckstrap of the cockpit at the forward end.

    • 9

Replace the pin and ring to its original position.

    • 10

Use your line to tie one end of the mainsheet traveler--a line used to adjust the shape of the sail--to the mainsheet hook at the block. Thread the opposite end of the mainsheet traveler through the two blocks at the lower boom.

    • 11

Continue threading the mainsheet traveler through the mainsheet block tying a figure eight knot at the end.
