How to Make Your Own Airtight Humidor

Starting a cigar collection doesn't mean you have to spend an arm and a leg on an expensive humidor. While top-of-the-line humidors can cost hundreds of dollars, you can make your own for a fraction of the cost. This project requires you to find and purchase most of your materials from a cigar shop. Once you have the proper materials in hand, the assembly and creation of the humidor is straightforward and requires no specialized knowledge.

Things You'll Need

  • Foam cigar tray
  • Locking plastic storage container
  • Scissors
  • Humidification pack
  • Spanish cedar sheets

Instructions

    • 1

Place the foam cigar tray inside the plastic locking container. Cut the foam with scissors if you need to make the tray smaller to fit the box. You want the container to have additional space when the foam tray rests inside, so make sure to use a container large enough to accommodate multiple items.

    • 2

Place a humidifying pack inside the plastic container, and open it to activate. Make sure the pack does not touch the foam tray, as the moisture can transfer to the foam and cause the cigars to get wet.

    • 3

Place a single sheet of Spanish cedar wood inside the plastic container. You can use any wood sheet sold by your cigar shop, but Spanish cedar is widely recognized as one of the best for humidors.

    • 4

Lay your cigars inside the foam tray. Make sure they do not touch the humidifying pack. Direct contact with moisture may ruin your cigars.

    • 5

Close the container by locking the lid in place. Inspect the lid to make sure you sealed all sides properly.
