How to Connect a 120V to a 240V Circuit

Connecting a 120-volt circuit to a 240-volt circuit can be achieved by using a transformer. Transformers can be used to couple two circuits which operate at different voltage levels. This type of network is used every day in power distribution systems. Power systems use transformers to connect the 240-volt distribution circuit to the 7.2 kvolt feeder circuit. The trick is choosing the correct transformer for the job. When a transformer is used in this way, it is typically called an isolation transformer.

Instructions

Shut off power to both circuits. Locate the 120-volt side of the power transformer. That side should face the 120-volt circuit. Make a break in the 120-volt circuit. The easiest way to do this is to disconnect one of the wires in the 120-volt circuit.

Connect the wire you just disconnected to one of the two terminals on the 120-volt side of the transformer. Connect the second 120-volt terminal of the transformer to the 120-volt circuit terminal that you took the initial wire from. The 120-volt side of the transformer has now been inserted into the 120-volt circuit.

Go to the 240-volt side of the transformer. Disconnect one wire from the 240-volt circuit and insert the 240-volt side of the transformer. The process is the same as above except now you are using the 240-volt circuit and the 240-volt side of the transformer.
