How to Be Good at Something

Most people can learn how to do something, but it takes extra effort to learn how to do it well. Whether you want to be good at an instrument, a game or a sport, the bottom line is the same: You have to be willing to put in the time necessary to develop your skills. With patience, perseverance, the right resources and help, you can be on your way to becoming good at whatever it is you dream of doing.

Instructions

Learn the basics. To be good at anything, you need to start from square one. To become a chess master, you must first learn the rules of the game. To become a world-class pianist, you must first learn the notes that correspond with the keys. Start with home study, using Internet resources and books from your local library. This will give you an idea as to whether the particular craft or skill is something you want to pursue.

Take classes. Instruction can help you progress beyond the basics. Notes on the piano can become melodies, and chess moves can become strategy. When you're confused, you can ask your instructor for guidance.

    • 3

Find a mentor and shadow him. Watching an expert at work can keep you motivated to become good. Mentors can provide tips to help you get better. An accomplished pianist can recommend scale exercises or particular pieces that will help you become accustomed to certain chord changes. A chess master can tell you which classic games to study to help develop your skills.

Practice. In order to be good at something, you must practice. Author Malcolm Gladwell, in his 2008 book, "Outliers," says it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert at something. Although you may not want to dedicate 10,000 hours to your chosen craft, regular practice is a key to becoming good. Plan regular practice hours, and stick to the schedule. As your practice progresses, your craft will become easier, your skills will develop and your enjoyment will increase.
