How to Make Stainless Steel Ice Cube Trays

Favored by hospitals because of its hygienic qualities, stainless steel is a popular metal in homes too. This design is for a two-piece ice cube tray, which simplifies washing it. This is especially important when you use it for food items other than water. The design features bent metal. According to renowned metalworker Emil F. Kronquist, metal can be scored like cardboard, to make a sharp bend.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the 12-inch long strip along its width at 4 inches, 6 inches and 10 inches, using the scriber and metal rule. Score the lines using the blunt chisel and hammer. Bend the strip to form a rectangle.

    • 2

Solder the sides to the base to form the tray, leaving a lip of about 1/4-inch all the way around. Ensure the join is good enough so no water will escape through any part of it.

    • 3

Scribe a line every inch across the width of the 4-inch long strip, using the scriber and metal rule. Saw 1/2-inch long straight cuts along these lines.

    • 4

Scribe the center lines of the 2-inch long strips, across their widths. Saw 1/2-inch long straight cuts along these lines.

    • 5

Slip the saw cuts of the shorter strips into the saw cuts of the longer strip to form the internal grid. Place the internal grid in the tray.
