How to Catch Shore Crabs

Shore crabs usually live in the tidal pools or the shallow areas of saltwater beaches. Typically much smaller in size than deep-sea crabs, many species of shore crabs can be caught by hobbyists and eaten in the same way as other types of crab. To catch a shore crab, just spot one and scoop it up with a net. You can also catch shore crabs using sturdy twine and bait.

Things You'll Need

  • Protective gloves (gardening gloves are fine)
  • Bucket
  • Twine
  • Scissors
  • Wooden dowel, 12 inches long
  • Bait, raw chicken or fish heads
  • Small net

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the gloves, which will protect your hands from splinters, burns from handling the twine and the crab's sharp pincers.

    • 2

Fill the bucket, which you will use to collect the crabs, with a small amount of seawater.

    • 3

Cut a length of twine, approximately 5 to 6 feet in length.

    • 4

Tie one end of the twine to the end of your dowel. Ensure that the knots are tight and the twine will not slide off the end of your dowel.

    • 5

Tie a small piece of bait to the other end of the twine.

    • 6

Lower the twine, bait end first, into the water, allowing the bait to rest on the ocean or tidal pool floor.

    • 7

Wait until you feel a tug on the twine and then gently pull the line up and out of the water. Pull slowly so you do not dislodge the crab.

    • 8

Grab the crab off the twine using the net, then dump it into the bucket.
