How to Rope Walk Up a Tree

Climbing a small tree with low-reaching branches is not always a difficult task. But if you want --- or need --- to climb up a tall tree with branches that are quite out of your reach, there is a way to do so. Using some sturdy rope, or even just your shoelaces as shown by Man vs. Wild star Bear Grylls, you can shimmy and climb up a tree in no time.

Things You'll Need

  • Shoelaces or rope, 12-inches long
  • Rope, the length of the tree plus 2 feet

Instructions

    • 1

Untie each of shoelaces, then tie them together into a knot. If using rope, tie each end of the rope into a knot around both of your ankles. For better comfort --- and if you're wearing boots or tennis shoes --- you can tie each end of the rope into a tight knot around your feet.

    • 2

Hold onto the trunk of the tree with your arms.

    • 3

Jump up. The tautness and traction of the laces or rope will hold you on the tree, while your arms will keep you in place and steady.

    • 4

Continue to grasp, or hug, the tree with your arms as you jump up the tree using the rope as traction. Do this slowly and carefully until you've reached the top.
