How to Repair a Crab Net

Crab nets are old tools that haven't lost their effectiveness in modern times. The same tools used by fishermen centuries ago can still be used to catch crab today. Crab nets are woven by hand from cotton polyester thread and a netting shuttle. After multiple uses, however, it's easy for netting to catch on claws, rocks, sticks and other debris. A hole in your crab net can reduce its effectiveness to zero, rendering it useless. With a little thread and a shuttle, you can repair the hole without having to create a new net.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton polyester thread, size 18

Instructions

    • 1

Thread size 18 cotton polyester string onto a netting shuttle until the shuttle is full of thread.

    • 2

Clean your crab net of debris until it is empty. Locate the hole on your crab net. Tie the thread to the ring just above and to the left of where the hole begins. Pull your shuttle through that ring and bring it back towards you in the ring just below it.

    • 3

Move the shuttle down so that the thread runs down to the ring just below and to the left of the bottom edge of the hole or tear in your crab net. Push the shuttle through the hole, loop it under the bottom edge of the ring and bring it back toward you.

    • 4

Move the shuttle back up to the top of the tear and insert it into the ring just to the right of the first ring you pushed it through. Repeat the process of pushing the shuttle through the ring, looping it around the bottom edge and bringing it back toward you. Take the shuttle back to the bottom of the tear and repeat the threading process.

    • 5

Continue threading the shuttle and new thread through the rings above and below the tear until a new "wall" of thread covers the tear. Bring the shuttle through the last ring four times. Cut the thread and tie a knot in the end of the thread, securing it to your crab net. Tug on the new net patch firmly both horizontally and vertically to ensure a tight fit.
