Different Viewpoints of Photography

The viewpoint of your picture is extremely important in photography. Different angles of the same scene can convey a very different feeling. A unique viewpoint can transform what would otherwise be a mundane photo. Taking into account a few simple aspects of photography will help you select the best viewpoint for your shot.
  1. Composition

    • Composition is one of the most essential elements of photography. A photograph reproduces a small window on the world, and a good photographer is conscious of everything going on in the picture. A different viewpoint can produce a very different composition. Elements such as movement, depth and shape are all part of a picture's composition, and should be taken into account. Be aware of where your subject is in the camera's field of vision and try to capture a few different viewpoints of the same scene.

    Light

    • Since a camera is essentially capturing light, lighting is always an important consideration when picking the best viewpoint. Always be conscious of shadow and move around your subject to emphasize or lessen its effect. If you choose a viewpoint that includes the open sky, you will need to be careful of things like exposure where light floods the camera and ruins your photograph. Watch how light hits and reflect off your subject as you try different viewpoints.

    Angle

    • The angle of your photograph can produce a number of different effects. For example, a top down shot can make someone look small, while one taken from the bottom can emphasize someone's height. Look around when taking a photograph and see if there is any way to get a unique angle for your shot, such as climbing up a tree or lying down on the ground. Always be aware of your position relative to that of your subject. Look through your camera's viewfinder and try moving around to get a different viewpoint. When you have a composition you like, snap a picture.

    Zoom and Lens

    • Your camera itself can provide a number of different viewpoints. Taking advantage of the zoom function is a good way to get a different perspective. For example, close-up of someone's face will obviously portray a very different picture than the same person posing as part of a group. You can also purchase a number of different lens like a wide-angle lens or a fish-eye lens which will alter the viewpoint of your picture.
