How to Make a Gothic Arch

The Gothic arch is a sharp pointed arch that forms when two arc segments come together. The arch evolved from the round-topped Roman arch and reaches higher than the Roman arch for a given width. Dark, looming Gothic arches decorate famous churches like the Notre Dame in Paris, France, and Salisbury Cathedral in England. Gothic architecture thrived from the 12th to the 16th century and innovations of the times allowed for larger open spaces with taller, towering windows. Easily create your own Gothic arch with pencil, paper and about an hour of your time.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the bottom line. Turn your paper the long way, in the landscape position. Draw a light line half an inch from the bottom of the page. This line represents the base of your Gothic wall and the bottom of your arch.

    • 2

Mark the center line. Draw a straight line down the center of the paper, using a ruler to ensure your line is straight. This line will be the center of your arch.

    • 3

Mark the side limits and spacing of the arch. Draw one line on either side of the center line 1.5 inches away and another set of lines .5 inches away from that line, or 2 inches from the center line.

    • 4

Mark the upper limit of the arch. Draw a horizontal line 5.5 inches from the bottom line across the five lines you created for the sides of the arch. Draw another horizontal line .5 inches below the top line. Erase the center line below the lower horizontal line to limit confusion.

    • 5

Measure and mark where the arch curve will begin. Measure the space between the outside lines of your arch. Use this measurement to draw a line from the bottom line and draw a horizontal line across the outside and inside lines.

    • 6

Connect the lines to create an arch. Draw a curved line from the top horizontal line to the outside line at the point measured in step five. Then draw a mirrored curved line from the bottom horizontal line to the inside vertical line. Trace this line on tracing paper and use the tracing paper to draw the line of the other side. The use of tracing paper is to ensure the same arch angle on both sides.

Optionally add stone decoration or draw walls surrounding your Gothic arch.
