Things You'll Need
Instructions
Ensure the revolver is safe. With the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, open the cylinder or loading gate to visually inspect each cylinder. Make sure each cylinder is empty or remove any ammunition still in the revolver.
Remove the grips and side panels. Using a screwdriver, remove the grips and side panels to expose the trigger and hammer assemblies. Some revolvers require the use of a hammer-and-punch set instead of a screwdriver to remove pins.
Visually inspect the trigger and hammer assemblies for dirt or foreign debris; debris can prevent the proper operation of the trigger or hammer or cause premature wearing of the metal parts in the revolver. Clean the assemblies with a gun-cleaning solvent and test the assemblies.
Inspect the trigger and hammer assemblies for worn or broken parts. When dirt or debris is not the cause of the malfunction, check the hammer, trigger and safety assemblies and inspect the springs to ensure they provide the correct tension or return action expected.
Inspect the cylinder and cylinder crane for obstructions. The hammer, trigger and cylinder assemblies operate in concert; as the trigger is pulled, the hammer moves back and the cylinder rotates to place a cartridge in position to fire. An obstructed cylinder or broken assembly prevents the trigger from pulling.
Carefully fit replacement parts and test the mechanisms again. Use the file set judiciously to avoid removing too much metal from a part and ruining it. File small amounts at a time and check the fit of the part regularly; parts must not be forced into fitting.
