How to Clean a Chilled Water Piping System

A chiller water piping system requires the use of a water tank to chill the water that flows through rubber or copper pipes. The water tank must be periodically cleaned to prevent contaminants in the system. This requires a citric acid solution available in most health stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • Citric acid
  • Brush
  • Nebulized water

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the main power supply to the water chiller.

    • 2

Disconnect the copper piping from the chiller, loosening the fittings with the adjustable wrench.

    • 3

Drain the water from the chiller tank.

    • 4

Fill a 5-gallon bucket with 1 1/2 gallons of warm water and add 35 oz of citric acid to the water. Mix the solution thoroughly.

    • 5

Remove the top panel of the chiller tank.

    • 6

Dip the brush in the bucket of cleaning solution and scrub the sides of the chiller tank.

    • 7

Rinse the inside of the tank with nebulized warm water. Drain the water from the chiller tank.

    • 8

Fill the chiller tank with clean water and then drain the tank. This will ensure that all of the citric acid has been removed from the chiller tank.

    • 9

Replace the top panel and then reconnect the copper piping. Turn on the chiller.
