How to Make a Trailer Smoker

Cooks that like to barbecue may want a portable smoker that they can take from place to place to cook for large crowds. An example of a portable smoker is a trailer smoker. This is a smoker that is constructed specifically to be hauled with a truck. A smoker trailer consists of a cooking chamber and a firebox. To do this yourself you require an old utility trailer and a 55-gallon steel tank.

Things You'll Need

  • Utility trailer
  • Power drill
  • Pry bar
  • 55-gallon steel tank
  • Angle iron
  • Welder
  • Heavy duty hinges

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the sides and floor of the utility trailer by using the power drill and pry bar. Take out screws by using the power drill and pry up the floor with the pry bar.

    • 2

Cut the 55-gallon steel tank into a top and bottom piece with a torch. If you do not have a torch take the tank to a metal fabricator to cut the tank.

    • 3

Create a frame for the bottom half of the tank by welding together pieces of angle iron. Weld the frame to the utility trailer. Weld the bottom half of the tank to the frame.

    • 4

Position the top of the tank on the bottom. Place heavy duty hinges on the back side of the two pieces and weld them into place. Weld a handle onto the front to open the top of the smoker.

    • 5

Open the tap and weld a metal grate to the bottom section of the tank. The metal grate is for the food being cooked in the smoker.

    • 6

Cut a round opening in the top section of the tank and weld a piece of pipe for a smokestack.

    • 7

Cut a square out of one end of the tank. Weld pieces of metal plate to create a box shape around the cut end of the tank. This will be the firebox.
