How to Tie a Zip Snare Knot

The zip snare knot is a free-moving knot that moves along the rope, similar to a lasso. When used in applications such as mountain climbing, the knot is called the Prusik knot or the triple sliding hitch. In mountain climbing, the knot is used for climbing rope. The knot is tied to a second rope, and hands hold the top and bottom of the knot. One hand moves up the rope, and the second hand follows. Use the zip snare knot, with one rope, to loop over an object and hold it in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the rope in half so you have a loop with two ends. Hold your hand sideways so that your palm is facing you.

    • 2

Drape the loop over the top of your hand. The loop will rest on your palm and the two ends will dangle in the back.

    • 3

Pull the ends up through the loop. Drape the ends over the top of your hand. Hold the loop in place with your thumb.

    • 4

Pull the ends under your hand and back up through the loop again. Pull down on the ends so they are dangling below your hand. This will tug the loop down as well. There will be four rows of rope around your fingers and the two ends dangling below your hand.

    • 5

Slip the two ends through the four rows. Start at the tips of your fingers and pull the ends toward your palm. Stop pulling before the rope goes all the way through the rows. Leave a loop.

    • 6

Slip the rope off your fingers carefully. Tighten the knot by slowly pulling on each row of rope. Hold the loop with one hand while tightening the knot.
