How to Make a Slate Pendulum Stand

Pendulums bring a calming essence to any area. They often function as conversational pieces for social gatherings. An eloquent way of displaying a pendulum is by using a decorative stone for the stand. Slate is a strong stone that fits the use of a pendulum stand perfectly. The stone can be cut easily using a wet saw, and it can be drilled and glued. Build your own slate pendulum stand by purchasing all your supplies at any local hardware store.

Instructions

    • 1

Scribe a line across one sheet of slate from corner to corner using your straight edge. Measure 1 1/2 inches along the edge of the tile and away from the corner where you started. Scribe another line starting here and ending at the same corner. Cut along these lines using your wet saw and compound push-stick. This is the arm that will hold your pendulum.

    • 2

Cut a 3/8-inch-wide by 1 1/2-inch deep groove in the edge of last tile so it is 5 5/16 inches away from the two edges it is parallel with. This slot will hold the arm to the stand.

    • 3

Drill a 1/16-inch hole through the arm so it is 1/2 inch away from the pointed end and at a right angle to the only edge that was not cut off the original tile.

    • 4

Position the arm in the groove that was cut in the tile so it angles over the tile and is perpendicular to the tile. Epoxy the arm in this position and let it dry according to instructions.

    • 5

Tie your pendulum to the stand using the hole that you drilled in the top of the stand.
