How to Rewire a Guitar Pedal

A guitar effects pedal requires the use of a foot switch. One type of foot switch you can wire to your pedal is called a 3DPT. This foot switch is known as a triple pole, double throw with nine pins. If your foot pedal is missing a switch you can wire a new one using a small amount of stereo wire.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 3DPT foot switch
  • 14-gauge stereo wire
  • Pliers
  • Soldering iron, solder

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the body of the foot pedal. Locate the guitar input and output. The input is located on the left of the body and the output is located on the right.

    • 2

Connect stereo wire to the input jack of the foot pedal by soldering. Bend the tip of the wire with the pliers and insert it into the left-middle pin on the foot switch.

    • 3

Connect a wire from the left-bottom pin to the middle-bottom pin of the foot switch. This will create a jumper that is used for the bypass position when the guitar is turned off.

    • 4

Connect a wire from the middle pin to the output jack of the foot pedal. Solder the wire to the output jack. This completes the path from the guitar input jack to the output jack through the foot switch.

    • 5

Attach a wire to the top-left pin on the foot switch. Attach another wire to the top-middle pin. These are used for the input and output of the guitar effect.

    • 6

Place the top panel back on the foot pedal and tighten the screws. Plug the guitar and into the foot pedal.
