How to Make a Privacy Tent

Construct a makeshift tent to provide privacy when you are out camping. Privacy tents are used for changing clothes and as an outdoor toilet or shower without having to leave the campsite. You can buy a ready-made, collapsible privacy tent but will save money by making one out of things found in nature and inexpensive items from the store. The important thing is to get the measurements correct so the the privacy tent will be large enough for anyone to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut four straight, 2-inch-thick branches into 7-foot-long rods with a handsaw. Cut one end on each rod to a sharp point with a knife, starting about 4 inches from the end of the rod.

    • 2

Mark the corners of a 4-foot square on the ground with sticks that form an "X." Remove the sticks from one "X" at a time and use a hand shovel to dig a 2-inch-wide, 1-foot-deep hole where the two sticks crossed. Keep the loose dirt next to the holes.

    • 3

Push the pointed ends of the rods into the holes and pound them down three to four times with a rubber mallet, or until they stand up straight by themselves. Pack the loose dirt tightly around the rods.

    • 4

Cut four 4-foot-long, 2-inch-thick rods with a handsaw. Place them horizontally from the top of one vertical rod to another and nail them in place.

    • 5

Wrap a tarp around the rods to form the walls of the privacy tent. To completely cover the walls and overlap the ends to prevent them from blowing open, choose a tarp that is at least 8 feet wide and 18 feet long. Feed ropes through the holes in the edges of the tarp and tie them to the horizontal rods with a tight overhand knot.

    • 6

Place rocks on the tarp where it drapes onto the ground around the bottom of the walls of the privacy tent. Do not place rocks on the bottom of the overlapping end, because this is where you will enter and exit the tent.
