How to Tie a Hitchknot

There are many varieties of hitch knots, including the clove hitch, buntline hitch and lobster buoy hitch. All hitch knots can be utilitarian in function and used for activities such as climbing or sailing. Other knots are useful in art or decoration, such as macrame. The basic hitch knot, called a half hitch, single hitch or simple hitch, is very useful and easy to learn.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the end of the rope and loop it around the object or pole.

    • 2

Wrap the loose end around the long end of the rope, and feed it up (or down) through the space between the object and the rope. You've just made an overhand knot, and have completed making a half hitch knot.

    • 3

Pull tight, or alternatively, feed the end back through the hole to create a loop and then pull tight. Pull the end of the rope to quickly release the knot.
