Typical Boats in Florida

Florida is undoubtedly the ideal state to be in the US if you love boating. Blessed with warm weather, lots of sunshine and over 1,200 miles of coastland -- not to mention hundreds of miles of inland waterways -- Florida has everything enthusiastic boat lovers could want. And with the Florida Keys, the Gulf of Mexico and the thousands of islands of the Caribbean all in close proximity, Florida surely deserves its reputation as the boating capital of America.
  1. Cruising Yachts

    • With hundreds of offshore island destinations and the cruising paradise of the Caribbean Sea right on its doorstep, Florida has a huge reputation as a cruising yacht mecca and is superbly situated for this class of boat. Yachts are vessels that are powered by the wind through the deployment of sails that catch the wind and propel them forward. Schooners, ketches, catamarans and sloops are all favored types, as are the smaller classes of pleasure yachts such as finns, lasers and hobie cats. Large pleasure vessels powered by engines are also described as yachts. Large charter yachts are very popular in Florida, and any form of seaworthy oceangoing larger cruising yacht and other luxury craft will find amenable sailing opportunities and docking facilities throughout the state.

    Powerboats

    • Large and powerful powerboats are popular classes of boat and ideal for Florida waters. From larger 40- to 50-foot powerboats to smaller speedboats that are accessible to the more modest budgets -- whether they are outboard motors, inboard motors or jet-boats -- Florida waters are wide open and spacious and provide calm and tranquil conditions ideal for power-boating. In addition, the numerous inland waterways and canals are also ideal places to open up the throttle and experience a bit of speed, particularly for jet-boats whose shallow draught makes them ideal.

    Cruising Boats

    • Florida has a huge network of inland waterways and lakes, not to mention the vast area of the Everglades and other swamp areas that make inland boating a common pastime, especially amongst weekend boaties. There are many marina choices and suitable year-round boating conditions. These waterways are ideal for multicabin cruising yachts, as well as small and powerboats. Also frequently found are bow riders, which have open space in the bow, or front, area; and cuddy cabins, which are small and maneuverable like bowriders, but have a covered front area that can be used for sleeping or storage.

    Fishing Boats

    • By far the most popular boating activity in Florida is recreational fishing. The waters off Florida are renowned for exhilarating deep-sea fishing with an abundance of large game species to be found. Almost any form of boat can be used for fishing, but some boats are especially designed for it such as specialist charter fishing vessels. Larger offshore fishing boats are comfortable and can reach water where exciting sport fishing is available, but smaller vessels for fishing closer to land are also common. From center consoles to bass style anglers, smaller craft can be towed on trailers to a variety of both freshwater and saltwater fishing hot spots.
