How to Tie a Good Knot

Whether a rope knot is "good" really depends on two things: the reason you're tying the knot and what you're tying the rope to. If you're tying two ropes together (or the two ends of a single rope), the best knot you can tie would be a "bend." If you're tying your rope to an object, you'd use a "hitch." And if you're tying a knot at the end of a rope, you'd use a "stopper."

Instructions

  1. Square Knot (Bend)

    • 1

Cross the end of the rope on the right (rope A) over the end of the rope on the left (rope B) so the two form an "X."

    • 2

Bring rope B over the top of rope A; then bring rope B around and behind rope A.

    • 3

Bring the ends of both ropes up. Again, cross rope A over rope B.

    • 4

Bring the end of rope B over rope A and then back under.

    • 5

      Pull both ends tight.

    Half-Hitch

    • 6

Put the rope once around the object you want to tie the rope to.

    • 7

Bring the short end of the rope under the long end.

    • 8

Bring the short end up and then thread it through the loop you've made, pulling it tight. This is a single half-hitch. To make the knot more secure, repeat Steps 2 and 3 to make two half-hitches.

    Stopper Knot

    • 9

Make a small loop at the end of your rope, crossing the short end over the long end.

    • 10

Bring the short end over and around the long end, then cross it under the entire loop.

    • 11

Bring the end of the rope back over the loop and thread it through the smaller of the two loops you've made, tying an overhand knot. You should now be able to slide the knot along the rope to make the first loop you made bigger or smaller.

    • 12

Thread the end of the rope up through the big loop and, holding both ends of the rope, pull tight.
