How to Use Dynamic Mics on a Tascam DP-004

Tascam's DP-004 digital pocket studio is based on the classic Tascam Portastudio concept. The DP-004 device can record two sources at once to an included SD card, and it records four tracks. A bounce feature lets you consolidate tracks and make room for more overdub layers. Mixing is also included. The built-in stereo condenser microphone can be used to capture rehearsals, or you can connect an external dynamic microphone to one of two ¼-inch jacks for a high-quality input.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the dynamic microphone to either the "Input A" jack or "Input B" jack on the back of the Tascam. Two mics may be used by connecting one to each jack.

    • 2

Press the "Input Setting" key while the transport is stopped and the "Home" screen is open to launch the "Input Setting" screen.

    • 3

Select the "In A" or "In B" setting and then turn the data wheel to scroll through the options. Options for both are "Off," where the input is off; "Int.Mic A-Low" or "Int.Mic B-Low," where the built-in mic is used with low sensitivity; "Int.Mic A-Mid" or "Int.Mic B-Mid," for middle sensitivity; "Int.Mic A-High" or "Int.Mic B-High," for high sensitivity; "Guitar/Line" through Input A and "Line" through Input B, which switches the internal mics off and set the inputs up for a guitar, or other input. Guitar inputs are only entered through "Input A," however; and "Mic," which is the setting if you've got dynamic mics set up on either or both jacks from the first step.

    • 4

Press the "Home" key to return to the home screen. Select the "Mic/Line-Guitar" switch on the left-side panel to complete the dynamic mic setup if you are using a mic on "Input A." In that case, choose "Mic/Line" and not guitar.
