How to Cure a Surfboard

Making your own surfboard is an intensive process that often helps surfers to grow attached to their boards. By making a surfboard rather than buying one, many surfers can customize their boards to suit their own surfing styles and needs. One step in making your own surfboard is the curing process. This process takes place after the surfboard resin is laminated and before the board is hot-coated and sanded. Some professional board makers may have different curing methods, but this method is simple and inexpensive, requiring not much more than heat.

Set your surfboard up so that it is not resting against any sharp or hard objects after it is laminated. Check the temperature of the room. The temperature should be anywhere between 70 and 115 degrees. Let the surfboard sit in the room for about 48 hours. The hotter the room, the better the surfboard. Do not let the room get warmer than 125 degrees.

Let your surfboard sit in the heat after polishing. For a room about 70 degrees, let the board sit for five to six days. the warmer the room, the less time the board needs to sit in the heat. For example, if it is 115 degrees, the board only needs to be cured for several hours.

Remove the surfboard from the heat once the resin on the board has hardened.
