How to Make Bi-Planes With Soda Cans

Instead of throwing out those beer cans, recycle them into a biplane model. A biplane is an aircraft with two main wings. The Wright brothers' Wright Flyer had a biplane design. In order to create your model, you'll need a couple of tools and pictures of a biplane as your guide. You don't need to purchase any special tools -- you can use tools that are commonly found in your household.

Things You'll Need

  • Beer cans
  • Scissors
  • Black permanent marker
  • Razor blade
  • Work gloves
  • Bonding glue

Instructions

    • 1

Put on work gloves and use scissors to punch a 1/2-inch hole near the top of a beer can.

    • 2

Insert one scissor blade inside of the hole and cut around the top of the beer can. Discard the top portion and set the beer can aside.

    • 3

Punch a hole using scissors in another beer can about 3 inches from the bottom of the can and then insert one scissor blade in the hole and cut off the bottom of the beer can. Set aside the bottom portion that you just cut off and the other part of the second beer can.

    • 4

Cut the second beer can in half. Take one half and mark the center with the black permanent pen.

    • 5

Cut horizontally on the second beer can to create two long strips. Flatten each strip on a flat surface.

    • 6

Create a 2-inch horizontal slit on each side of the first beer can using a blade. Measure 1 inch up from each slit and create another 2-inch horizontal slit.

    • 7

Slide one long strip from the second beer can through one of the slits on the first beer can on the left side. Drag the long strip through the slit to the right side of the first beer can. Repeat this procedure with the other long strips on the second beer can and slits on the first beer can.

    • 8

Apply bonding glue where the slits and the strips meet and allow it to dry for about four hours.

    • 9

Fold the bottom part that was cut from the beer can into a cone and add bonding glue around the inside rim of the open end of the cone shape. Place the end of the cone on the front of the beer can to add the plane's nose and let it dry for three to four hours.

    • 10

Outline a tail wing on the other half of the beer can with the black permanent pen. Cut out the tail wing shape. Apply bonding glue to the back of the beer can and add the tail wing. Allow it to dry for three to four hours.
