How to Measure the Elevation of a Building Lot

Measuring the elevation of a building lot is important because the slope of the ground requires a proper grade to drain properly. You can see if the grade of the slope is correct by determining the elevation for each corner of the lot. This requires taking accurate measurements and then performing a mathematical equation. To do this you will need to view the building lot first-hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Select two contours in one corner of the lot. Measure the distance between the two contours by using a tape measure. Note the measurement such as 20 feet.

    • 2

Measure the distance from each contour to the opposite side of the lot. Note the measurements such as 73 feet and 69 feet.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the contour measuring 69 feet to the corner of the lot. Note the distance such as 15 feet.

    • 4

Write the equation that is needed to calculate the corner elevation. In our example, this looks like (73-69)(15/20) + 69 or 4(.75) + 69 which equals 72 feet.

    • 5

Repeat this process for the remaining three corners of the building lot to determine the elevation.
